The TeleMessage breach has revealed alarming flaws in the way secure messaging tools are adapted for regulatory oversight. A hacker exploited a server misconfiguration to access a Java heap dump, uncovering unencrypted messages, passwords, and internal metadata from a government-modified version of Signal known as TM SGNL. This tool was actively used by more than 60 US officials, including staff from FEMA and the Secret Service. The incident raises serious concerns about compromising encryption for the sake of compliance, showing how poorly secured adaptations can put critical communications at risk.
