Is it possible to automatically launch an attached executable file when upon opening a PDF?

Is it possible to embed an executable file within a pdf document and trigger it upon opening the pdf file?
I thought it was impossible since modern and versatile PDF readers block the automatic execution of attached files and additional javascript.
So when you attach a file to a pdf, you need to extract and run it manually.
However, I saw this in conjunction with one of the latest Redline versions. Is it real, or is there simply
a vulnerability in a specific PDF reader that allows automatic execution? What do you think?
