Russian homonyms, slang, idioms etc non-Slavs have trouble with

actual: Mac as in Macbook

вода
literal: water
actual: filler as in filibuster

танцевать на бубне
literal: to dance on a tambourine
actual: to go to excessive lengths to please someone or to try too hard in a way that's almost humiliating

Делать из мухи слона
literal: make an elephant out of a fly
actual: make a big deal out of nothing

I could recognize many more if I saw the literal translations, but I can't think of them offhand. We add more as we come across them.

"бабло" same as бабки, dough (slang)
"шара" (freebie, something obtained for free)
"на шару" (for free, gratis)
"на пофиг" (don't care, whatever)
"(не) пруха" ((no) luck, (un)lucky)
"прёт" (it's going well / I like it)
"сварганил" (quickly made, cobbled together)
"ку" (hi, hello - shortened greeting)
"водка" (water)
"вешать лапшу на уши" (to lie, literally "to hang noodles on ears")
"работать спустя рукава" (to work lazily, literally "to work with sleeves down")
"ни пуха, ни пера" (good luck, literally "neither down nor feather")
"бить баклуши" (to be idle, literally "to beat baklushi")
"дело в шляпе" (it's in the bag, literally "the matter is in the hat")
"зарубить на носу" (to remember well, literally "to notch on the nose")
"одеть" (to dress someone) / "надеть" (to put on clothes)
"битки" / "биток" / "бтц" / "бтс" (bitcoins, slang for Bitcoin (in the context of crypto), sometimes the same as a биточек; a round small cutlet of minced meat)
"эфиры" / "эфир" or "етх" (slang for Ethereum (in the context of crypto), literally ether)
"пмсм" same as "imho" literally "по моему скромному мнению" (in my humble opinion)
"вообщем" a common mistake for "в общем" (in general), can be confused with "вообще" (generally/at all)
"школьник" / "школяр" a person who associates their behavior with a child who is in school. in other words, this person is inadequate, inexperienced, unreliable, unserious, literally schoolboy/schoolchild
"мамонт" victim of fraud, literally mammoth
"хомяк" )) a person who is easily fooled, who believes in everything. unlike the мамонт, this person is of low intelligence. "хомяки схавают" (hamsters will eat it up) (that's what you can say about people who seriously ‘tapped’ in the hamster kombat project).
"лох" (лицо обиженное хулиганами) this is what a person is called when they have stupidly blundered/made a silly or ridiculous mistake. in criminal lingo means victim.
"хз" or "х#й/хер знает" (literally "dick knows") / "хрен знает" (horseradish knows) - no idea, who knows, idk

а вообще дохуя (много or a lot) вытекает из нецензурной брани, без полного изучения иностранцу будет непросто в неформальном разговоре

PS. there's also some word/phrase that literally translates to "schoolchildren", my guess is that it's actually something like "noobs"

actual: spherical cow analogue. impractical, theoretical with no real-world application, or overly simplified.

I also noticed some phrase that often got translated to "horses in a vacuum".

это не очень распространено, но ты про "сферического коня в вакууме" (spherical horse in a vacuum) - something speculative, over-simplified, out of touch with reality.
кстати о конях, есть еще выражение "конь в пальто" (literally "horse in a coat") и пословица "дарёному коню в зубы не смотрят" (literally, don't look a gift horse in the mouth) or jokingly, "дарёному коню под хвост не смотрят" (don't look under the tail of a gift horse)
the first means no matter who, unknown who, or unclear who. usually answers the question “who?”, when want to avoid answering. "дед Пихто" (Grandpa Pihto) is the same.
the second has such meanings - one should not expect much from things received for free / it is unseemly (inappropriate or ugly) to find faults in a gift

I don't think I will be learning Russian anytime.) The thread was originally meant to be a lookup table. Russian realism is well, literature.

про что я и говорю - в токсе могу прям задушевную беседу вести о велиичии моего любимого языка. Как раз в тему, начал разбираться на досуге со слово образованием и открыл для себя, много нового, к примеру: фраза - извини меня, она же извинения, она же, из вины не я, а теперь включим мозг и получает под благопристойным словом скрыт посыл на х#й, типа сам виноват, а не я. На алкоголь $ с тебя)
