Russian

Noun

пендос • (pendos)

  1. (ethnic slur, derogatory) Alternative spelling of пиндос (pindos, “a Yank (American), (obsolete) a Pontic Greek”)

----

Thought for the day:
Most Americans don't know the word: 'pendos'. Even if the literal translation is, it would be hard to grasp the derogatory depth of the word with that Russians use it as I understand it. Perhaps this is what happens in cross language contexts.

There are even such things:

Really, it is quite harmless word in russian/ukrainian that was meant originally for "greeks" in Odessa, translated from greek literally like "a palm" or according to another version - "poor, dirt". I think it just sounds funny and that's it.

Why it is slur because historically (after all this greek stuff) it was used among russian-speaking guys in Africa to call like that natives or black people. So back then meaning was like a slug, whose skin color is darker than yours with thought smth like "fucking foreigner".

In Russia it was widely used due Balkan wars when pindos people decided that they can do shit to our sebian friends without any consequences. In that time it was again strongly negtive and used by serbianes themselves to ANY foreign war participants except russians and ukrainians.

So you see, this shit is more complicated and it is not fair to call it just "a russian word", as I said it was greek word born in Odessa and I think now ukrainians use it more frequently than russians but anyway, welcome to our forum, my pindos friend!

Might be slightly stereotypical on your side because it's a bit stereotypical on our side) But its all good). I personally bought the stacking matryoshka dolls and khokhloma tableware from my Novosibirsk visit before the pandemic. I will visit it again next year or something once the colleagues are ready, but this time we will also stay in Moscow rather than just for a layover, a triangular route, a longer one.)

а мне нравится этот янки)
Historically, it was used by the Brits to mock American colonists during the Revolution. There were even songs that were mockery like 'Yankee Doodle' by the Brits. It's a children's rhyme now with some modifications but the same song.
Later, during the American Civil War, the Southerners used it to refer to Northerners (an abolitionist, a threat to Southern way of life and states' rights) in a derogatory manner.
This is already well known from our high school history.

In general, if you call an American, Yankee or yank, it can also be a little confusing in 2024 because of the New York Yankees, it's a baseball team. In the Bible Belt (the South), it's somewhat mocking but in a different way, it means that you are not from the South, typically North-East, North. The Southerners will most likely object to this, it's like calling them outsiders. In the North-East, it's a sense of pride, unless you're a Mets fan.)

Sometimes, we also it in a self deprecating way like 'We Yankees have a habit of getting involved in things that don't concern us."

Жаль, но правда в том что бы сформировать эффективно работающую комманду в определенной степени нужно будет друг другу доверять. Без этого все будет на уровне - мелочь из карманов тырить(это уничижительный жаргонизм, означает - воровать по мелочи).

To be honest, I didn't understand your reply but I attempted something clever:

Yes, I have such 200 year old American (north-east) expressions myself in English but no one around me uses them or even knows them. I read some history now and then.

Sometimes anyone can be immature, now it's my turn:

Некоторые обороты речи, выражения и ошибки написания, заставляют задуматься, а пиндос ли он?
Хотя шоу-программа конечно интересная. Поживём увидим.

Do you expect what you saw on MTV back in the 2000s?)
Vocabulary is just one piece of the pie. My vocabulary is larger than what I dump here. But there's something like this: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/computer-science/authorship-analysis
Spelling mistakes? Excuse me?

У фбр тоже дифицит кадров, привлекли индуса изображать пиндоса. Ну он хотя бы старается, вон даже позеленел от натуги, аж уши в трубочку свернулись, но улыбаеться дружелюбно.
